I read this book by Burke Hedges. It’s called “The Parable Of The Pipeline”. I’ll summarize the story for you in my own words.

There were 2 good friends who lived in a small village. Pablo and Bruno. They were both young and dreamed of a better life for themselves. They’d often discuss their dreams of how they would be the richest man in the village.

It came to pass that the village wanted to hire two men to carry water in buckets from a river some distance away to a cistern in the town square. Pablo and Bruno were hired, and they were both elated at getting such an opportunity. So they worked from morning to night. They were paid for every bucket they brought back.

At the end of the day, Bruno rejoiced at such an opportunity, exclaiming that their dreams had come true. However, Pablo wasn’t sure about it. He did not enjoy carrying buckets to and from the river. He was determined to think of a better way to bring the water to the village.

The following day, Pablo had a brilliant idea! He shared it with Bruno.

“Instead of traveling and carrying buckets to and fro, we could build a pipeline from the river to the village!”

Bruno did not like the idea. It sounded very new to him, and there were no short-term benefits. Bruno was also unwilling to change. He rejected the idea and insisted that he was happy with the job.

Despite that, Pablo was not discouraged. He sacrificed his evenings and weekends to build the pipeline. That resulted in an increase in fatigue, and he brought back lesser buckets, which led to a decrease in his earnings. Soon, Bruno started earning twice of what Pablo was earning. However, Pablo persevered. Even when Bruno and the villagers laughed at him while he dug in the soil, he kept going, knowing that one day, his pipeline would be ready.

Months passed. Bruno was a wealthy man. He had bought a cow and a new hut. He spent almost every night drinking with the other villagers. Pablo kept reminding himself that “tomorrow’s dreams are built on today’s sacrifices”. To him, short-term pain equals long-term gain. His eyes were constantly on the end result.

Bruno’s shoulders began to stoop and his back started to hunch. Age was catching up on him. His earnings dropped as he was no longer able to carry as many buckets as he could when he first started out. As for Pablo, the pipeline was almost complete. Pablo could smell success.

The day finally arrived. The pipeline was completed! The water flowed from the river into the cistern. The villagers praised Pablo for such an outstanding innovation. Pablo was jubilant as he no longer needed to carry buckets to the village. The water flowed whether he worked or not. It flowed when he ate. It flowed when he was asleep. It flowed when he was in the bar, enjoying a drink with the villagers. As long as water flowed, he would get paid!

Bruno was retrenched as his services were no longer required. Pablo felt sorry for Bruno, so he approached him and said, “Bruno, the pipeline I built isn’t the end of my dream! It is only the beginning! I plan to build pipelines all over the world! Let’s be business partners!” Bruno saw the bigger picture and agreed.

Many years passed. Bruno and Pablo were retired millionaires. However they still had income flowing into their pockets from their pipeline businesses. They went for numerous vacations around the world. Sometimes, on their vacations, they would spot people carrying buckets to earn a living. They would suggest the idea of a pipeline to them. Unfortunately, most of them would dismiss the idea and give excuses.

“I haven’t got the time.”
“My friend tried building a pipeline and failed.”
“I’ve carried buckets all my life. I’ll stick to doing that.”
“I know of people who lost money in this and I don’t want to take any risks.”

Bruno and Pablo felt sad for these people because they lacked vision. They concluded that indeed, they lived in a world of bucket carriers,
where a small percentage of people would dare to build a pipeline for a better future.

Monday blues?

When I was still schooling, I used to get that a lot. Having graduated, I decided to start working from home. Right now, I can work as and when I want to. Furthermore, I need not work 8 hours a day. I can work for just an hour, or 2, or 3…

It is totally up to me. I have more time to spend with family and friends.

Freedom. I’m free from Monday blues. You can be free too!
